There are plenty of recreational opportunities along the waterfront, with parks and trails for cyclists or joggers. There is also Ontario Place and the CNE grounds. Along the waterfront, there is skating, kayak rental, and many festivals. There is also easy access to the Toronto Islands by ferry.

This neighbourhood is the namesake of Fort York. During the Battle of York in 1811, Fort York was destroyed by the Americans but was rebuilt in 1814. A railway began to operate just north of Fort York in the 1850’s. The fort was used as a military establishment until 1934, when it opened as a historic museum. Fort York is now a protected national historic site.
