Shops at Don Mills is the biggest attraction in the neighbourhood because of its open shopping and village concept. It is an outdoor shopping mall, with high-end shops and restaurants, complete with a parkette in the middle, which is surrounded by cafes, making the area family-friendly and appealing.
Edwards Gardens is also a huge attraction in this neighbourhood. It is a huge and beautiful botanical garden which is connected to many ravines, which are frequented by bikers and runners. The Donalda Golf and Country Club is also a neighbourhood landmark.
Bond Park is a large park also part of the Don Mills neighbourhood. It has baseball facilities and organized leagues, tennis courts and clubs and a children’s playground. There is a public library nearby which puts on programs for children of all ages. The Ontario Science Centre is not far from this neighbourhood as well.
The Don Mills name is based off the Don River and the fact that in the 1800’s there were many mills operating in this part of the Don Valley. During World War I, Don Mills was a “model-farm” with award-winning livestock and equipment. In the 1950’s, the farm was sold to the Don Mills Development Company who turned the area into the neighbourhood we know now. Don Mills is known as “Canada’s First Planned Community” because of their post-war suburban development.
