- The neighbourhood is everything to us. For thirteen years, we haven’t needed a car.
- A butcher, baker, fishmonger, Riverside Organic Market, and some of the city’s best coffee shops and breakfast spots like Lady Marmalade and Amber Cafe, plus cocktail bars like The Comrade, restaurants and pizzerias, vintage boutiques, curated thrift stores, all steps away from our front door, most found at the end of our street.
- Our kids have always walked to school. They meet friends at the local Starbucks or Jimmy Simpson’s Park to play basketball and tennis.
- We spend lots of time walking through the neighbourhood with our dog, connecting and chatting with neighbours and people in our community along the way. It makes our day.
- We approached our renovation with intention, embracing and honouring the home’s original Victorian charm and reintroducing ornate ceiling mouldings and hints of its traditional architecture, juxtaposing them with touches of Japandi modernity.
- The kitchen is the hub of our home. Big wall-to-wall glass windows face east at the rear and west at the front, flooding the main living spaces with natural light. An eleven-foot island serves as the breakfast and entertaining zone, with a pantry where large appliances and piles of homework and crafts have a place to land.
- There’s never a time when this house isn’t filled with natural light. Coming from New Zealand, we’ve always been conscious about that.
- The kitchen flows into the dining room and backyard, which becomes a second living zone in summer.
- We designed this home thoughtfully for how our family actually lives. A built-in storage unit at the entrance stows jackets, shoes and kids paraphernalia out of sight.
- The basement is fully self-contained, so family visiting from overseas can stay completely independent, and it doubles beautifully as an AirBnB, with glowing reviews to match. Four large bedrooms, generous windows for light, and bathroom amenities on every level. No one will feel cheated they didn’t get the best room.
- Over eleven years, this house has grown with our family. A home we have retreated to and entertained in. It’s been a sanctuary to return to and a place for Anna’s studio, supporting her art practice. Now we’re excited for the next caretakers to love living in it as much as we have.
We immediately fell in love with the charm, quality and location of this Victorian villa when it hit the market in 2015. After getting to know our new home and neighbourhood for 3 years we decided to embark on a major renovation to create our dream family and entertainment home. It was a significant undertaking however definitely delivered to our vision. We were fortunate that the original bones of the house were solid which allowed us to fully gut and replace internal structures, including the addition of a two room basement apartment, while preserving the outer charm of the villa. Except for the roof and the walls, the house was essentially rebuilt to last for another life-time.
