History.
The Kingsway is a quaint neighbourhood with a rich history. If looking at the stately English homes and massive Oak trees lining the streets wasn’t a giveaway, then the Old Mill should seal the deal. Once called the ‘Kings Mill’ this stone mill was Toronto’s first industrial building and distributed lumber for shops and government buildings.
The idea for residential buildings alongside the Humber River came from Robert Home Smith, a man from Stratford Ontario. According to the Etobicoke Historical Society, Smith was born in 1877, and studied law at Osgoode Hall, but illness-induced deafness prevented him from practicing this profession. Instead, he entered business, working as a trustee officer in National Trust’s Real Estate Department, which whetted his interest in land development and is the reason the community exists today!
